SpeakLocal — Offline AI Tutor
Last updated: August 2026
The short version
SpeakLocal has no account and no server of ours. Your conversations, transcripts, vocabulary and practice history are stored only on your device. The app makes exactly one kind of content request over the network: a one-time download of the AI model file from GitHub. After that download, conversation, feedback and review all run on the device and work with the internet switched off.
What the app stores, and where
- Conversations and settings — in an AES-256 encrypted local database on your device.
- Practice history and vocabulary — in a local database on your device.
- The AI model file (about 550 MB) — in the app's private storage.
All of it is removed when you uninstall the app. Settings → Privacy Center shows you every file and its size, and Erase all my data deletes the databases and the encryption key.
Microphone
The microphone is used only while you are speaking to the tutor or doing a pronunciation drill. Speech is turned into text by your device's own speech-recognition engine (the app requests on-device recognition where the platform supports it). The app does not record audio files and does not upload audio. Note that speech recognition is an operating-system service — how Android or iOS handles it is governed by your device maker's policy, not ours.
Network connections
Being precise, because a vague claim is worse than none:
- Model download (one time) — the app downloads the AI model file from
github.com. GitHub redirects the download to its own content servers. No personal data is sent; it is an ordinary file download. - Ads (free plan) — the Google AdMob SDK makes its own network requests to serve and measure ads. See Google's advertising policies. A Pro subscription removes all ads, and no ad request is made once Pro is active.
- Purchases — the Google Play Billing SDK talks to Google Play to process and restore purchases.
- Speech and text-to-speech — handled by your device's own engines.
Your conversations, transcripts and practice data are not part of any of these requests.
Feedback and scoring
SpeakLocal shows qualitative feedback — Good, Almost, Try again — plus one short tip. It deliberately does not show a numeric score. The app compares the words your device transcribed against what was expected; it is a practice aid, not a measurement of pronunciation accuracy and not a certified assessment.
Ads
The free plan shows a banner above the navigation bar and, occasionally, a full-screen ad after a practice session ends. Ads come from Google AdMob. The Google ad SDK may access a device advertising identifier and collect limited information (such as approximate IP-based location and ad interactions) to serve and measure ads. A Pro subscription removes both ad formats.
Purchases
Subscriptions and the one-time content pack are handled entirely by Google Play Billing. We never see your payment details; the app only learns whether a purchase is active. Purchase state is cached on your device.
Children
SpeakLocal does not knowingly collect personal information from children. It has no account system and stores everything locally.
